Romanian Political Elite from Transylvania

About the project

The Romanian Political Elite from Hungary (1867-1918). From elaborating prosopographies to the sociology of elites

CNCS-UEFISCDI project number PN II-RU PD-425/2010

The project opened as a research on the political history of the Romanians that lived in Hungary between 1867 and 1918, starting with the prosopographical study of their political elite. This term included both de elite of the national movement (board-members of the national parties) and pro-government elite, Parliament members from Hungarian parties and other government high-officials. These last categories were until now banned in historiography, being considered “traitors”, or “renegades”, so to study them was a grasping necessity.

The project aimed a double target. First, we intended to construct a catalogue containing the Romanian politicians which activated in dualist Hungary. We have estimated their number at approximately 180-200, in the end we have identified 226 persons. We intend to expend the databases in the years to come, until the point of having a sole unified database of all the Romanians from Hungary involved in political activities.
